Not sure if I am unusual or not, but when I first picked up a camera I learned how to use it by reading the manual. I went step by step to learn what each feature did. Aperture. Shutter Speed. Focus. White Balance. To say the methodical approach is strange for me is an understatement. I am pretty scattered by nature (my mom once told me she had no idea how I have made it this far in life given my lack of focus). Part of me thinks it was a sign that I was serious about learning everything I could.
Anyway, during that process, I decided that I love exploring different ways to focus a shot. To me, how you focus on a subject changes the whole tone and experience of am image.
Fast forward to today. As I was leaving my other career (I am in marketing for 3 days a week), I found a dead butterfly in the parking garage. I brought him home with me and took some shots with the goal of capturing some details of his wings.
However, as I played around, I thought that the more compelling shots were the more conceptual shots. I absolutely love them. If I was more patient, or took the time to edit them carefully, I think they could be amazing.
Where I started - The details
Handheld vs. tripod, so don’t judge too harshly.
Where I ended up - modern art
I cannot love these any more. :)
Let’s all give it up to this little creature who donated him/herself to art.
