Heads are gonna roll: 1-1/2 months of sculpting

Thought it would be fun to document my progress sculpting, and share a few things I have learned for anyone who wants to jump in.

  1. If you go “by feel” you create scary looking things.

  2. Anatomy matters.

  3. Smash it and start again.

  4. YouTube tutorials are helpful but sparse.

  5. Watch “Sculpting a Clay Head” by Tip Toland even if you aren’t into sculpting. The woman is joy.

  6. Playing with clay is therapeutic, but it dries out your hands.

Here are some of my horribly, wonderful creations.

Starting out with a win: open eyes

A mini-win today but creating some passible open eyes. I also made a patterned scarf that I love by rolling the clay thin and drawing on a design. Unfortunately, this will crumble as the clay dries because the scarf is too thin and there are air pockets underneath. To do it right I would need to sculpt it. Her eyes aren’t perfectly symmetrical, but better. Her face structure is more human thanks to anatomy.

Self-portrait

The Covid quarantine has taken its toll on all of us. :) After a punch in the nose I harvested my clay brains to mold a couple of cats.

The Famished

Woah! This lady needs a sandwich. And some normal sized, symmetrical eyes.

Some newer stuff. A Greek woman. An attempt at Venus de Milo (10 inches tall). And a stern old lady with a big nose :).
