Midday, bokeh and B&W

This family gave me a call right after Christmas. They had just moved, were travelling for Christmas, and had a ton going on. We did a midday session at their house.

Midday is not a friend to photographers. Midday means bright sun. And bright sun can mean potentially harsh shadows or waaay too-bright glare that is just awful for portraits.

But midday also has its advantages. Bright sun creates contrast, which enhances black and white conversion and also accentuates bokeh (the out of focus areas/background in the image) creating a compelling yet subtle background.

Fortunately, we found a wonderful shady area in their yard that kept the light off their faces while making the backgrond glow. It was kinda perfect.

While the color shots of this family are super lovely, I love black and white. They just feel more intimate.
